Whats the best way to get to

Started by: tomplum (12536)

the Manchester Royal hospital, here are the ways I'm thinking,
1. drive there,
2. catch a train to Oxford Rd and walk/taxi / bus from there
3. drive to Leyth and catch the V1 bus

any other way you might know ?

Go by bike Tomplum reading the site -how to get here the best option seems to be by bus from Leigh V1 or V2 driving there sounds like a night mare with very limited parking when you get there

Tom catch the VI bus. It stops on Oxford Road on the corner of the street that leads to the original hospital entrance. You’ll pass Emily Pankhurst’s house as you walk down the street. The bus then carries on to the terminus which is close to the new entrance and the eye hospital. Your appointment letter will tell you which entrance to use. Park on the Doctors Nook, council owned, car park which is a short walk to Leigh bus station.

Tom

Walk to the bus stop on Warrington Road, where the roundabout was and catch the no 10 bus to Leigh Bus Station, they are every 12 mins.

Catch the V1 to Manchester Royal LINK

More info LINK

Considering how far away it is, it's a piece of piss from Poolstock, I like the Bee Network

Use the Metrolink.

Drive to the Parkway park and ride just off the M60 near the Trafford centre
Leave the car there for nowt
Take the tram to Cornbrook, change and take another to Eccles. Get off at Ladywell, it’s then a 5 min walk to the hospital.

The best way is to go by car as the Hospital is not in the best position where the use of public transport is concerned unless you live on a local bus route which stops near the hospital.

Another way is by taxi, if your are rich enough to afford one!

You can get the V2 from Atherton, free parking in town centre but check bus times. It has always been a good service when I have used it.

Thank you to ALL for your help, It seems the V1 bus from Leigh is the best option although Tommy tee's idea of a Bee Bus day out from Marus bridge might be a loooooong Day bus riding to me. No its nothing serious just a bit of routine eye treatment. I was considering driving there but my worry was parking and of course the congestion there and back So The V1 from Leigh to Manchester it is. I've cycled up and down that bus lane a few times

Gaffer, I was planning on parking on the bus station car park, It says,
" free parking for valid bus ticket holders" Would my buss pass as a valid ticket ?

Tom

It is a long bus ride from Marus Bridge to Leigh, because it goes via Ashton, Golborne and Lowton, but if you return to Leigh just time for the evening rush hour, which can last all day around there, there is no easy way to get from Leigh to Poolstock by car, so as to sit in your car in traffic jams, after having your eyes messed about with, wouldn't be my idea of fun, instead I would sit on the number 10 bus to Marus Bridge and relax, and let the bus driver have all the hassle of the traffic.

You can get to Leigh faster on the bus, if you go via Wigan bus station and catch the service which goes to Leigh via Platt Bridge and Bickershaw, which can work at off peak times, but if you got the bus to Wigan at 4-5.00pm from Leigh via Platt Bridge or there is another service which goes via Hindley Green, you probably wouldn't get home until 7.00pm and I am not joking, the roads into Wigan from Hindley and Platt Bridge 'gridlock' at rush hour.

But it's down to personal choice, and what yoo are happy with

Actually Tommy tee , yoo are a very wise man and I value your highly informative posts and yoo have now swayed my mind to going the whole way via bus, It makes sense both in logistics and economy because I am a buss pass holder so, Its a ' no brainer' as some would say

TTS the No 10 bus runs from Shudehill to Brooke house where ever that is. The No 10 and 10A bus from Wigan to Leigh have been renumbered 610 and 611

Yes Peter I noticed that too and wondered had the bus driver used the old route numbers because. before they muddled them about, It was the 610 before,,

GM Buses have renumbered about 20 different routes. Tom originally the No 10 bus run to Shubshaw Cross cannot remember what the Wigan-Leigh number was under Wigan Corp

PeterP

Did Wigan Corporation buses run all the way to Leigh, or was it an LUT route ?

Originally the Wigan Corp route Ashton was number 1 and 2, 1 going down Wigan Road, 2 going down old road, the number 1 would drop off outside of the British School and then turn round on the junction with Gerard Street, doing a U-turn and stopping outside of the Queens Cinema on the return leg to Wigan, the number 2 went up Bryn Street and then turned left on to Gerrard Street, then stopping at the bus stop outside of Mark Williams and Slaters, before heading back to Wigan also stopping at the bus stop outside of the Queens.

If you have a bus pass why not get the bus in to Wigan, then train to Oxford Road and then a bus from Oxford Road straight to the hospital?

Cheshirecat you can use your bus pass but you also have to pay an extra £10 per annum to use the train/trams in Greater Manchester

Chesh, Thats a 3 move operation, the more moves you do the more can go wrong, I see your point in train riding as. its quicker ( if it turns up) many get cancelled and delayed , driving is a one move operation but not the best because of congestion and parking so, Tommy tee's suggestion is the best i think and, after a summit meeting with Mrs Plum, she agrees,

610 to Leyth and V1 to Manchester, We might vary it on the return depending on what time we are let free,

I didn't realise they had changed all of the bus numbers in Wigan, and they have only done that in the last two weeks or so, maybe only in the last week, but I think it is a good idea, the old 610 Hawkley Hall circular which went to Hawkley Hall via Newtown and Worsley Mesnes, that ended in 2015 when it merged with the 631 service and became just the 631 service, basically reverting back to how it was in the 1980s when I first moved on to Worsley Mesnes.

The old bus number for the Wigan to Leigh service via Ashton, Golborne and Lowton was the 601 service

On about Cheshire Puss's suggestion to use the train, Tom as it my opinion spot on, and exactly what I think about the train services, it might be a quicker option, but it can easily go wrong, the trains are in an awful state and I wouldn't trust them.

On a positive note, to be able to have a short walk and then catch a bus and then catch another bus, after which you will be some 25-30 miles away at a major teaching hospital, I think is brilliant, and those Bee buses have WiFi and every seat has a USB plug, and the bus talks to yoo all the way to where you are going, telling you where you are, what the next stop is etc and also there is an on board TV which basically talks crap and shows crap, but the old Wigan Corpy buses didn't have those facilities, it is the science fiction of the 1960s and 70s come true, so embrace it, and use it, and enjoy it, because your parents and grand parents could have only have dreamed of such things some 50/60/70 years ago, and that is just the transportation, just think of the technology there now is in the hospitals that you are going too.

When I first moved to Poolstock Lane we had a unique bus stop that was very rare, The Highfield circular stopped in the bus stop out side our house. So we had a bus that we could get on our house and go to Wigan, It went from Poolstock lane turned left at Warrington road and left again at the Ben Johnson and through Hawkley and then onto Wiganso on our return we could get on the same bus and it dropped us off at the bus stop on our door step, Pretty cool hey ? Now we have the 639 which is the best service for getting into Wigan but, We have to cross the road to go to Wigan and its a 10- 15 minute ride into Wigan but it only runs hourly and 2 hourly on Sunday,
